Glimpses of the past, FOX BAY EAST

  • New-Managers-house-Fox-Bay-East-built 1914/15

On 26 June 1889 Russell H Buckworth, manager, along with Charles Lane, the cook and his wife and child were occupying the manager's house at Fox Bay East. There was also a 'mens' house in the settlement housing 5 labourers, a cook and a carpenter. In 1914 Maurice Buckworth, the then manager, and his wife Emily (daughter of Vere Packe) were living in the manager's house, a building of which the original part was a Crimean hut. In the early hours of 30th April it was totally destroyed by fire. In September 1914 Russell Buckworth sent two men out to the Falkland Islands to build the new manager's house, a Boulton & Paul pre-fabricated building. The Buckworth's baby son Phillip Maurice who died of pneumonia in 1908 is buried in front of the house on what became the lawn in later years.
